Playful Posing

"I didn't know you were posing me!"

We hear it all the time from our clients...I don't want our pictures to look "POSED" but they want the most flattering pictures they can get so what's a photographer to do? Playful posing keeps your clients so distracted they don't realize you're actually sneaking in that dreaded posing. But first you have to understand what's going on in your client's mind. We will dig into what clients are worried about going into a photo shoot and why they put up barriers. Then we'll talk about ways to move them through those barriers into a relaxed playful attitude that allows you to do your work. We'll talk about prompts that work and ways to have more fun with your clients.

Barbi Barnum, M.Photog., CPP, BSE, MFA

Studio B Photography Fredericksburg, VA

Barbi Barnum began her artistic career as a sculptor and art educator in Weatherford Tx. When life threw her a curve with a relocation to VA, adoption of one son and birth of another all within 1 year she put away her sculpting tools and threw herself into this new life. She soon found out that while her life was crazy busy she missed creating. It didn't take much to realize that babies and blow torches were never going to work out though. Soon she branched out into sculpting with light through photography and never looked back.

Barbi has a studio in downtown Fredericksburg where she does a variety of work and specializes in wedding photography. She is a master photographer that has won many awards including Best Wedding Image at SEPPA, VPPA Top Ten Photographer, and PPA Bronze Photographer of the Year. Many of her images have received merits and been included in the loan collection of the International Print Competition. She has served on the Board of Directors of VPPA and filled many leadership roles in her local district. Barbi is also a Juror in Training and has traveled to different states to help juror their image competitions.

Barbi has a degree in Art Education from the University of Central Arkansas and has also studied at Savannah College of Art and Design, The Corcoran School of Arts and Design, and Miami International University of Art and Design. She has 12 years of teaching experience in public schools and 8 years in private schools. She has also dedicated years to mentoring young artist in one on one training. She is currently involved in an initiative that is training public school art teachers how to include photography in their curriculums to make Fine Art more accessible to all children
